About GetBeta.com

What is Get Beta?
Get Beta is a site offering free climbing information (Beta) to anyone interested. It was developed to give climbers the ability to share their knowledge of climbing with others through various channels located in the site. The site is always changing (hopefully for the better) and a lot of the changes are made based on user feedback. So, if you want to see something on the site you are encouraged to let us know, chances are sooner or later it will happen. Check back often to see what's new.

Why GetBeta?
We feel the site can be a positive influence on climbing and the climbing community and are constantly striving to do just that. Our hope is that the site can be utilized by every breed of climber and even those that don't climb as a means to glean useful information about climbing around the world.

The Guide.
The Guide is an organized listing of climbing information that has been contributed by our members. The structure of the Guide is simple and intuitive, making it a breeze to find information without ever having to use your keyboard. The structure of the Guide is as follows.....

Countries > State/Region/Province > Locations > Areas > Sections (optional) > Routes > Beta

This simple but robust structure creates a framework that can encompass virtually any type of information you would need relating to climbing. Whether that be Planning a trip to a remote climbing location, preparing your rack for a free ascent of some big wall, to figuring out the crux of a route you have been projecting, The Guide can handle it all. That said, the guide will always only be as good as its poorest contribution. Since Get Beta does not enforce a certain format for contributions, we leave a lot of room for less than useful stuff to be added. We can only hope that another member will step up to the plate and amend the information or that the original member updates their contribution with more meaningful content.

Who should contribute to The Guide?
A contributor is someone that has a first hand account of the item they are contributing. A good contributor should posses a couple of qualities. First they should be able to fill in every field listed in a contribution form (even ones that aren't mandatory) or be willing to find the information requested in the form. Second they should think like someone who knows absolutely nothing about the item they are contributing and wants to find out everything there is to know about it. Many times a contributor (I'm guilty of it as well) will lapse into a "everyone knows this stuff already" frame of mind and will submit an uninformative contribution without any substance. Its best if you can think about how you would like the guide to read, when looking for information, before making a contribution.

Bottom line is, we want the guide and the site as a whole, to be useful. Therefore, if you only possess the bare minimum of information regarding a climbing location, area, route, or other then we ask that either A) you do more research to make a better contribution or B) let someone else with more knowledge of that item submit it. Currently, we probably aren't going to deny any submissions but really would ask that you give it your all. If you have to do a little research on the item you'll be a better person for it and the climbing community will be better off because of it. Honestly, we would rather have 10 accurate listings of obscure climbing locations then 10,000 half - assed ones.

What's with the fish?
Its a betta fish, get it. If a little play on words isn't your idea of funny then try this, if that doesn't work then there's no pleasin ya.

More about stuff will be coming soon........
